Cyclocross – NECCL Round 5 Meadowfield

  • Under starters orders

After a few years missing from the club calendar, we are involved in organising two cyclocross races this year.  First up was the NECCL series which took place at Meadowfield Sports Centre on Saturday 31 October.

After a week of heavy rain, race day was warm for the time of year and thankfully dry.  An early start saw a large group of volunteers turn out to mark out the course and get set up for first competitors arriving to sign on at 11am and racing got underway at 12 noon.

Despite the rain earlier in the week the course held up fairly well, although there were a lot of very muddy bikes by the end of racing.

A good turnout of Cestria riders saw Chris Burns take second place in the mens race, with Sandy Cheung the winner in the Womens race.  Michael Kebell was racing in club colours and Chulwoo Han was making a debut appearance.

Remarkably, three generations of the Clan Burns were taking part with Lucy Burns in the Under 12 race, Chris and David Burns in the Senior Men, Dave Burns in the Veterans class, and Sandy Cheung in the Womens class.

Massive thanks to all the volunteers who turned out early and stayed late, without whom the race wouldn’t have been possible.  Thankyou to Michael Openshaw, Jonathon Foreman, Ray Haldane, Lesley Goodrum, Richard Ritz, Matt Brown, Peter Scott, Angela Fusco, Gareth Clarke, Richard Nicol, Barry Fordham, Stu Cook, Michael Kebell, Chris Burns and Sandy Cheung.

Next up is the CXNE Cyclocross at Hermitage School, Chester-le-Street on 20th December 2015.  Chris Burns is the organiser so it should be a great one.
